Study Shows Facebook Friends Can Make You Happy Or Sad

Latest research indicates that emoticons used in the Facebook posts by friends’ end up having a significant influence on the tone of our own status messages. An interactive tool to gauge the mood of friends’ updates and analyze what type of posts might lift your spirits uses scientific measure. The tool selects your top friends from a list of 25 people that you appear in photos or are tagged by.
The tool takes into account the behavioral patterns of the top 25 people in your friend list while discarding those that have updated their status fewer than 10 times in one year. The tool measures negativity and positivity of posts on Facebook. The app compares every word in a status update and eventually lists positive words like “hilarious” and “thoughtful”, and negatives words, like “disaster” and “pathetic.”
The app does not take context into consideration and it also does not take sarcasm into account. The system used by the app is called Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count, and is founded by a researcher of University of Texas. The research suggests people post positive updates on weekends. Their mood shows a spike during vacations and holiday season. Similarly there is negative effect on status updates during rains and bad weather.
